We’re to going to refer you to the Wise Geek article below that does a nice job of explaining a 1099 position (which refers to the Internal Revenue Service 1099 form).

1099 positions can be totally “legit,” but as with all positions you should very carefully examine all facets of the job -responsibilities, the reputation of the organization, the pay, the duration of the position, and so forth. But be aware that you will almost certainly not receive employee benefits, such as health insurance or retirement benefits.
