Introducing Yourself to a Recruiter

This may seem like a stupid question, but how do I introduce myself to a recruiter who already knows my name?

Actually, this is a very good question. Here’s the scenario I think you’re concerned about...

You’re sitting in an interview waiting area and the recruiter approaches and says, “Hello Nancy, I’m Rebecca Smith.”

You don’t want to respond, “Hello, I’m Nancy Jones,” because the recruiter already knows your name! So an appropriate greeting can be as simple as “Hello Ms. Smith, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” or “Good afternoon Ms. Smith. Thank you for meeting with me.” If you’ve already met the recruiter, you may want to say something like “Hello Ms. Smith, it’s a pleasure to see you again.”

Note that the greeting is Ms. (or Mr. or Dr.). Only address a recruiter by her first name if she has previously asked you to call her by her first name – perhaps at a networking event or a first interview.
