Like so many aspects of the job search – the answer is, “It depends.”
If you’re writing an email cover letter or a prospecting letter, we suggest you attach your resume in both Word and pdf format, because some recruiters may not open Word documents for fear of contracting computer worms or viruses. Near the end of the email message you can write: "I have attached my resume in Word and pdf format for your convenience.”
Most large companies use Applicant Tracking Software to initially screen resumes for “key words”, rather than having an actual person pore over hundreds or thousands of resumes. The majority of software programs cannot read pdf documents. For that reason, when applying to larger organizations, we suggest you only submit Word documents (unless instructed otherwise).
So a good rule of thumb – if given the opportunity submit both. If only given one choice – submit a Word version.
Great advice. As a recruiter for a large company I like Word documents best. Our ATS (Applicant Tracking System) can pull out the information we require when you download a Word document. PDF's are harder for us to work with though they do look great.
