Do recruiters really check social networking sites?

Q: Do recruiters really check candidates’ Facebook profiles or is this a job search myth?

Glad you asked. In 2008 we asked employers who recruit USD students if they check candidate profiles on Facebook and other social networking sites. 3% said “Always” and 17% said “Occasionally.”

Fast forward to Fall of 2010. 20% said “Always” and 51% said “Occasionally”.

This is pretty compelling evidence that (a) there’s a definite trend toward employers’ using social networking sites in the recruitment process, and (b) students should think long and hard about their profiles, photos, and content.
