This is actually an excellent question because a lot of students don’t understand NPOs (Not for Profit Organizations). So here’s the abbreviated explanation.
An NPO is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals. Examples include charitable and philanthropic organizations, public arts organizations, museums, historical societies, religious organizations, foundations, mental health agencies, and trade unions. Most government agencies, colleges and universities, and school districts also meet this definition.
And just to complicate things a little, there’s a whole category of NPOs called NGOs (Non-Governmental Agencies) that exist to further the political or social goals of their members. There are thousands of NPOs, some are fully or partially funded by the government, whereas others are self-funded.
So you can see why about 1 out of every 8 Americans works for an NPO.
Somebody has to run these organizations. So although they may have volunteers and unpaid interns, most of the staff are full-time paid employees.
The Career Services website contains a long list of NPO job sites which illustrate just how many different agencies and positions exist on a local, state, national, and international level.
