When an employee within an organization recommends that you apply for a position – it’s always a good idea to ask his permission to include his name in the letter. This is a professional courtesy. If he’s says it's okay, which he undoubtedly will, then compose and send a well written cover letter. In the first sentence, mention that you are writing on his recommendation. Unless it’s a very small company, you should indicate the person’s job title and department.
Because he likely has considerable experience at this company, you may also want to ask your dad’s friend to review the cover letter prior to your sending it.
And be sure to follow-up with him to tell him the outcome and to offer your thanks.
